The disease is caused by four distinct serotypes of dengue virus (DENV), DENV-1 to -4, all belonging to the Flaviviridae family, genus Flavivirus. Some 3.6 billion people live in areas at risk of DENV transmission, resulting in up to 390 million infections and 96 million symptomatic cases per year. Although the disease is highly endemic in the West African region, little is known about the prevalence and distribution of DENV in Niger.
