{"id":3154,"date":"2024-01-16T08:22:24","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T08:22:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.afroscreen.org\/?p=3154"},"modified":"2024-01-26T07:54:25","modified_gmt":"2024-01-26T07:54:25","slug":"beninese-teams-ready-to-sequence-lassa-mpox-and-other-viruses-with-high-epidemic-potential","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.afroscreen.org\/en\/beninese-teams-ready-to-sequence-lassa-mpox-and-other-viruses-with-high-epidemic-potential\/","title":{"rendered":"Beninese teams ready to sequence Lassa, Mpox and other viruses with high epidemic potential"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent emergences in Benin of the Mpox virus in May, then Lassa in August 2023, have motivated AFROSCREEN partners to develop their sequencing capacities for genomic surveillance beyond the SARS-CoV-2 virus.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus, in October 2023, with the support of IRD through the AFROSCREEN project, the IRCB (Institut de Recherche Clinique du B\u00e9nin, directed by Pr Achille MASSOUGBODGI, supported by UMR IRD MERIT) and the LFHV (Laboratoire des Fi\u00e8vre H\u00e9morragiques et Virales et Arboviroses, directed by Dr Anges YADOULETON), have strengthened the sequencing platform, with new quality control equipment (Tapestation, Agilent) and panviral sequencing reagents (for sequencing over 3,000 viruses). These two institutes organized the training of 6 Beninese biologists in NGS sequencing of the Lassa and Mpox viruses, on samples collected during the epidemic phase. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La mission des deux ing\u00e9nieures de l\u2019IRD TRANSVIHMI Christelle BUTEL et Laetitia SERRANO s\u2019est d\u00e9roul\u00e9e du 9 au 20 octobre 2023 au laboratoire de l\u2019IRCB \u00e0 Abomey-Calavi. Elle a permis de consolider l\u2019expertise th\u00e9orique et pratique en s\u00e9quen\u00e7age et en analyses bioinformatiques des donn\u00e9es de s\u00e9quen\u00e7age des deux biologistes b\u00e9ninois, Odilon Paterne NOUATIN (IRCB) et Islamiath KISSIRA (LFHV) qui avaient d\u00e9j\u00e0 b\u00e9n\u00e9fici\u00e9 d\u2019une formation initiale de 2 mois \u00e0 Montpellier en d\u00e9but de projet sur le s\u00e9quen\u00e7age du SARS-CoV-2, ainsi que l\u2019expertise de Flocas DANSI SOCLO (LFHV), Antoine HOWDONOUGBO (LFHV), Olga QUENUM (LFHV) et St\u00e9phane SOHOU (LFHV). <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"368\" src=\"https:\/\/www.afroscreen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Image2-1024x368.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.afroscreen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Image2-1024x368.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.afroscreen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Image2-300x108.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.afroscreen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Image2-768x276.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.afroscreen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Image2-1536x552.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.afroscreen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Image2-600x216.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.afroscreen.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Image2.jpg 1751w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sequencing results obtained during this training course on IRCB&#8217;s iSeq100 (Illumina sequencer, supplied by AFROSCREN) were excellent, with the production in just a few days of complete, good-quality genomes for the Lassa and Mpox viruses for the first time on site in Benin.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technical mission also provided an opportunity to discuss ways of improving experimental sequencing protocols in Benin, and to take stock of the laboratory&#8217;s needs in terms of equipment, facilities and further training. The sequencing capacities of the LFHV and IRCB teams have been strengthened to enable them to react more rapidly to new epidemics of Lassa, Mpox or even other viruses (e.g. arboviruses), to identify strains and thus document the origin of emergences, and to inform public authorities about the circulation of viruses with high epidemic potential to help control them. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recent emergences in Benin of the Mpox virus in May, then Lassa in August 2023, have motivated AFROSCREEN partners to develop their sequencing capacities for genomic surveillance beyond the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
