More sequencing is needed in Africa to better track variants

Dr Alpha Kabinet Keita, Deputy Director of CERFIG in Conakry, Dr Dramane Kania, Pharmacist-Virologist, MURAZ Center in Bobo-Dioulasso, and Dr Richard Njouom, Head of the Virology Service at the Pasteur Center in Cameroon, in Yaoundé, participated in an interview article on the importance of sequencing in Africa, appeared in the online media “The Conversation”.

The Omicron variant, first spotted in South Africa and Botswana, has spread fast. This again raises the issue of tracking variants. To understand how the pandemic is developing in Africa, The Conversation spoke with Alpha Keita, a virologist at French research institute (IRD) and deputy director of Guinean infectious diseases centre CERFIG; Dramane Keita, a virologist and chemist at Burkinabe research organisation Centre Muraz, part of Burkina Faso’s public health institute INSP; and Richard Njouom, head of virology at Cameroonian research body Pasteur Center in Cameroon in Yaoundé. They take stock of the situation and reflect on the challenges of sequencing.
